Welcome back to Terminology Tuesday!
Last week, we explored the key elements of staircase design. This week, we’ll be focusing on architectural features related to windows.
Let’s break down four terms that are often used in window design:
• Transom: A horizontal beam that separates a door from a window or an opening above it. Transoms provide structural support and often accommodate transom windows, adding light or ventilation to a space.
• Lunette: A lunette is a crescent-shaped or semicircular window, often placed above doors or within a pediment. These unique windows bring in natural light and serve as a striking design feature.
• Mullion: This is the vertical divider between window panes or sections. Mullions provide structural support to the window and create distinct visual divisions.
• Muntin: Muntins are the thin strips that divide individual panes of glass within a window. Today they often serve a decorative role, adding a traditional look to the window.
