Happy Terminology Tuesday! đź“–
This week, we’re highlighting three architectural features that elevate the design of a structure:
• Portico: A portico is a covered entrance or porch supported by columns, creating a transition between the outside and inside of a building.
It enhances the framing of the entrance, offers shelter, and often serves as a grand focal point. Porticos are commonly seen in classical and modern architecture.
• Veranda: A veranda is a roofed, open-sided porch that extends along the outside of a building, often wrapping around it, offering a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, while a porch typically refers to a smaller, covered entryway. Verandas are commonly found in residential architecture, enhancing both function and aesthetic appeal.
• Breezeway: A covered, open-sided corridor or walkway that connects two buildings. Breezeways provide shelter while allowing airflow between spaces, offering a comfortable transition between indoor and outdoor environments.
