Happy Terminology Tuesday!
Each week, we explore architectural terms that shape the design world. This week, we’re focusing on three essential elements found in staircases and railings:
• Balusters: These are the vertical posts that support the handrail on a staircase or balcony. They can be simple or intricately designed, adding both safety and style to a structure.
• Balustrade: A balustrade is a collective term for the entire railing system, including the balusters, handrail, and bottom rail. It’s commonly used to provide safety along staircases, balconies, or terraces.
• Newel (Newel Post): The newel is the larger central post at the start, end, or turning point of a staircase, providing structural support for the balustrade. These are often decorative focal points in staircase design.
