Welcome back to Terminology Tuesdays! đź’ˇ
This week, we are diving into the essential parts of a roof. Let’s take a closer look at some key roof terms:
📍 Ridge – The highest horizontal point of a roof where two sloping roof planes meet. Often has a ridge vent for attic airflow.
📍Eaves – Eaves refer to the entire roof edge that overhangs the walls, often containing fascia, soffit, and sometimes gutters.
📍Gable – The triangular wall section at the end of a gable roof, between the edges of the two sloping roof planes.
📍Hips – The diagonal lines where two sloping roof sections meet, forming an outward angle.
📍Valley – The inward angle where two roof slopes meet. It channels water down into the gutters.
📍Rake Board – The rake board runs along the sloped edge of a gable roof. It protects the edge of the roof and gives it a clean, finished look.
📍Fascia – A flat board attached along the roof edge (at the eaves), just behind the gutters. It helps support the lower edge of the roof and hides rafter ends. The rake board runs along the sloped edge of a gable roof, while the fascia runs horizontally along the bottom edge of the roof.
📍Soffit – The underside of the eaves, typically ventilated to allow air into the attic.
📍Gutters – U-shaped channels that collect rainwater from the roof edge and direct it to the downspout.
📍Downspout – A vertical pipe connected to the gutter that carries water from the roof to the ground or drainage system.
📍Vent Pipe – A vertical pipe that comes up through the roof, usually from plumbing systems, to release sewer gases safely outside.
Understanding these roof components helps clarify how a roof protects a building and keeps functioning properly. Visit our website to learn more about other architectural terminologies: https://lnkd.in/gG5bFSBh
